Why We Started Seniora Active Living Club: A Community Created by Seniors, for Seniors

What if retirement wasn't the end of contributing—but the beginning of a new chapter?

At Seniora, we've always believed that growing older doesn't mean slowing down. It means having the freedom to learn, share, contribute, and continue living with purpose.

Last month, I posted a simple message on Facebook.

I was looking for retired individuals who were interested in organizing activities together for the senior community.

I didn't expect what happened next.

Meeting Mr. Jack Tan

A few days later, I met Mr. Jack Tan.

He's not a school teacher, despite everyone calling him "Teacher Jack." He's a retiree who has spent years wanting to continue contributing to society using his knowledge and experience.

Like many retirees, he didn't lack passion. He lacked a platform.

We immediately connected because we shared the same belief:

Retirement should never mean becoming irrelevant.

That conversation became the starting point of something much bigger.

Introducing Seniora Active Living Club

Together, we started Seniora Active Living Club.

Our tagline is simple:

A Club for Seniors, By Seniors.

This isn't another activity centre where the organizer decides what everyone should do.

Instead, it is a community where seniors decide what they want to learn, what they want to teach, and what kind of activities they want to create together.

At Seniora, our role is simply to make it possible.

We provide the venue, administrative support, coordination, and behind-the-scenes assistance.

The ideas, leadership, and direction belong to the seniors themselves.

Mr. Jack Tan continues to play an important role as the facilitator of our discussions, helping conversations flow naturally rather than telling people what they should do.

That's exactly the kind of community we hope to build.

Giving Seniors a Voice

On 1 July 2026, we held our very first discussion session.

Thanks to the support of Yayasan Suria and everyone who attended, nearly 20 participants joined us—far more than we expected.

What stood out wasn't the number of people.

It was what happened during the conversation.

At first, many participants were quiet.

They were used to waiting for organizers to decide everything.

"What activity should we do?"

"What are today's arrangements?"

These are questions many seniors have become accustomed to asking.

But as the discussion continued, something changed.

People started sharing.

They talked about hobbies they had never had the chance to pursue.

They spoke about skills they wanted to teach.

They suggested activities they wished existed.

The room slowly transformed from a group of attendees into a community of contributors.

Rethinking Active Ageing in Malaysia

Across Malaysia, many senior activities still follow a familiar pattern.

Exercise classes.

Health talks.

Line dancing.

While these activities are valuable, we believe active ageing can be much more than that.

Learning doesn't stop at retirement.

Neither does creativity.

Nor curiosity.

Some seniors want to explore artificial intelligence.

Others want to learn photography, board games, art, technology, languages, or even become facilitators themselves.

When we create opportunities for lifelong learning, we create opportunities for purpose.

Every Senior Has Something to Learn. Every Senior Has Something to Teach.

This belief sits at the heart of Seniora.

We don't see older adults as passive recipients of care.

We see them as people with decades of life experience, knowledge, wisdom, and stories that deserve to be shared.

That's why our goal isn't simply to organise activities.

Our goal is to build an active ageing community where seniors continue to learn, contribute, and inspire one another.

Because healthy ageing is not only about physical health.

It's also about staying mentally curious, socially connected, and emotionally fulfilled.

Starting Small, Dreaming Big

For now, we're taking one small step at a time.

Beginning in July 2026, Seniora Active Living Club will meet every Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at our Johor Bahru centre.

Each week features a different learning experience—from preventing muscle loss and mobility improvement to AI image creation and board games.

Every session costs just RM10.

There are no product sales and no hidden agenda.

Only learning.

Only sharing.

Only community.

Building the Future of Active Ageing

This is more than a weekly programme.

It's the beginning of a movement.

A movement where retirement is not viewed as the end of productivity, but as the beginning of a new opportunity to contribute.

A movement where seniors are not simply participants—they become leaders, mentors, facilitators, and lifelong learners.

At Seniora, we believe that every community already has incredible people with valuable knowledge.

Sometimes, all they need is a place to gather.

And perhaps that's the role we are meant to play.

Not to lead every activity.

But to create a space where seniors can lead one another.

Because we believe:

Every senior is more than a participant. Every senior has the potential to be a contributor.

If this vision resonates with you, we'd love to welcome you to Seniora Active Living Club.

Together, let's redefine what retirement can look like.
