JB Healthy Ageing & Dementia Awareness Day 2026: When Doctors and the Community Came Together in Johor Bahru

On 10 October 2026, doctors, families and community partners gathered at Seniora @ Lotus's Bukit Indah in Johor Bahru for the JB Healthy Ageing & Dementia Awareness Day 2026, under the theme "Care Today, Live Better Tomorrow."
It was Johor Bahru's chance to learn about healthy ageing and dementia directly from doctors, in a warm and approachable setting. The response was beyond what we hoped for.
Why Dementia Awareness in Johor Bahru Matters
As Malaysia's population ages, more families are caring for a parent or grandparent whose memory is changing. Many are unsure what is normal ageing and what needs a doctor's attention. Many also feel alone while they work it out.
That is why this event was organised by a committee of doctors and community partners. Early awareness helps families notice changes sooner, ask better questions and plan better care. Dementia is not something to face in silence, and a community that understands it can support each other.
Highlights of the Day
Doctors and the public, in real conversation
The moment we remember most is the interaction between our doctors and the audience. The talks quickly became conversations. Attendees asked about memory changes, healthy ageing habits and how to support a loved one, and the doctors answered openly.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Hamdi Najman, Dr. Ng Chai Chen, Dr. Lim Hong Tak, Dr. Suraya Yusoff and Dr. Irene Looi for sharing their time and expertise with our community.

Health assessments that gave people a clearer picture
Many guests took part in health assessments during the event and left with a better understanding of their own health. Knowing where you stand is the first step to taking better care of yourself and your family.

Seniors on stage
Seniors performed a ukulele piece and a praise dance, to warm applause. Their joy was a reminder of what active ageing means. Growing older can still be full of music, movement and purpose.

Early Signs of Dementia: What Families Should Know
One question came up again and again, so here is a short guide. Common early signs to watch for include:
Forgetting recent conversations or events more often than before
Difficulty with familiar tasks, such as managing bills or following a recipe
Getting confused about time, place or direction
Trouble finding the right words
Changes in mood, personality or interest in usual activities
These signs do not always mean dementia, but they are a good reason to speak to a doctor. An early assessment brings clarity and gives families more options for care.
About the Organisers
The event is led by a committee of doctors and community partners, and hosted at Seniora @ Lotus's Bukit Indah by Seniora, an elder care provider in Johor Bahru. The focus is public education, not the promotion of any one organisation.
What's Next: An Annual Event
The overwhelming response has inspired us. We will work even more closely with doctors to bring more public education sessions like this to the community, and the JB Healthy Ageing & Dementia Awareness Day will return every year.
Follow the event's social media pages to be the first to hear about the next session.
