As Malaysia moves rapidly toward an ageing society, the need for medical escort and accompaniment services is growing. However, escorting an older adult to the hospital should be more than simply “going along”.
It requires skills, judgement, clear boundaries, and a strong sense of responsibility.
On 13–14 December 2025, we conducted a two-day Medical Escort Training Programme with one clear intention:to professionalise medical escorting and prepare individuals who truly understand its value.

Why structured training matters
Hospitals can be overwhelming environments for older adults.Mobility limitations, sensory or cognitive decline, anxiety, and complex medical procedures all increase vulnerability.
Without proper training, even well-meaning helpers may unintentionally increase risks.
This programme was designed with one guiding principle:👉 Medical escorting must be competent, respectful, and human-centred.

Key areas covered in the programme
Over two intensive days, participants received hands-on training in:
Fall prevention and risk awarenessAnticipating risks before accidents happen
Safe wheelchair transfer and mobility supportEnsuring safety for both the older adult and the escort
Toileting assistance with dignity and boundariesRespecting privacy while providing necessary support
Emergency response and crisis handlingStaying calm and knowing appropriate actions
Role-play communication skillsCommunicating effectively with seniors, families, and healthcare professionals
Hospital workflows and the role of a medical escortUnderstanding scope, limits, and collaboration with medical teams
Beyond skills: building professional values
We believe medical escorting is not about taking over.It is about supporting older adults to do what they can,and stepping in only when support is truly needed.
By the end of the programme, participants gained more than technical skills. They developed a deeper understanding of the ethical responsibility, boundaries, and social value of this profession.
They are now ready to serve—within hospitals and across the community.
